Health Benefits Of Taking Folic Acid When Pregnant

Folic acid can be found in a variety of foods.  It is a B vitamin that helps your body create new cells each day.  It is vital that you have it in your diet; otherwise you can be diagnosed with anemia, which can lead to further health problems.  If you are anemic, you likely already take some type of folic acid supplement.  By eating leafy green vegetables, a variety of fruits, and dried peas and nuts, you can likely get the nutrients that you need.  However, if you feel that you need an additional supplement to add to your diet, then you should not hesitate to take one each day because the benefits will greatly increase your overall health.

When it comes to pregnancy, folic acid becomes extremely important.  It is found in nearly every prenatal vitamin due to the importance of ensuring both mom and baby have a good amount of the nutrient.  If a woman does not have an adequate amount of folic acid within her diet while pregnant, it can lead to many major birth defects for her baby.  The reason it can lead to brain defects is because this vitamin is the key nutrient that helps develop a baby’s brain and spine while in the womb.  Therefore, it is important that you know exactly what nutrients are in your prenatal vitamin and make sure that all the essentials are there.

While you are pregnant, you not only want to make sure that you are taking your prenatal vitamin but you also want to make sure you are eating well.  No longer are you only eating food for yourself and for enjoyment.  You are now eating food to help you body grow and develop a child within your womb.  This is obviously something that you want to take serious, and be cautious of what you eat each day.  It is important that you get a good amount of whole wheat breads and grains each day.  Whole-wheat cereals are also good options because they taste good and offer several necessary vitamins and nutrients to help your baby grow.  If you feel that you are unsure of the best food to eat while pregnant, you should not hesitate to ask your doctor for further advice.

Last, you will want to make sure that you are as active as possible during your pregnancy.  Mothers who maintain a modified exercise routine typically will have a more enjoyable pregnancy and much more energy.  Not to mention, you will not gain as much weight which will keep you and your baby healthy because you will not have to worry about high blood pressure or other pregnancy complications.
